Frequently asked questions

What is PTAX?

The reference exchange rate the Banco Central do Brasil publishes every business day from quotes by dealer banks. Brazilian contracts, invoices in foreign currency, accounting and taxes usually point to it, most often the closing sell rate.

Buy or sell: which one should I use?

It depends on the contract or rule you follow. For converting a foreign-currency amount into reais, many contracts and tax rules use the sell rate. Both come in every response.

What about weekends and holidays?

There is no PTAX on days the central bank does not publish one. Pass the date you need; leave it out to get the latest business day.

How much does it cost?

Nothing. PTAX lookups are free. You need an account for an API key, and the $5 welcome credit is there for the paid tools.

Can my AI agent use it?

Yes. Add the Superpowers MCP server to Claude, Cursor, Codex or ChatGPT and ask in plain words, or call POST /v1/run with the tool bcb.ptax. The Portuguese version of this guide is at /pt/api-ptax.
